Short Description
4Paws is a VRChat locomotion system that lets humanoid avatars move on four legs. It is not just an animation toggle. It includes custom locomotion animations, VRCFury-based setup, Basic and Pro installers, optional Desktop camera support, AFK/Sit/Tail animations, and compatibility tools for avatars using custom locomotion systems such as GoGo Loco.

4Paws is a full locomotion system for VRChat humanoid avatars.
It adds a playable four-legged movement mode with dedicated animations and VRCFury-based controls. The system was originally developed for NovaBeast and later expanded into a more universal setup for humanoid furry avatars and other compatible humanoid characters.
The current version has been tested on several avatar setups, including:
- NovaBeast
- Rexouium
- Nardoragon-style GoGo Loco setup
- Foxi Paws
4Paws is designed for humanoid avatars, but VRChat avatars are not standardized. Some heavily customized avatars may require manual fixes or additional setup. Avatars are not included. You must own the avatar you want to install 4Paws on.
What It Does
When 4Paws mode is enabled, the avatar uses custom four-legged locomotion animations instead of regular humanoid movement.
- The goal is to make the avatar feel like it is actually moving on four paws, not just playing a pose or single animation.
- Depending on the version, 4Paws can include:
- Walking
- Running
- Crouching movement
- Jump / fall behavior
- Sit animation
- Tail Chasing animation
- AFK support
- Desktop camera options
- GoGo Loco / custom locomotion patching
When 4Paws mode is enabled, the system replaces the avatar movement with custom four-legged locomotion. The goal is to make your avatar feel less like a humanoid playing an animation and more like a character actually moving on four paws.
Basic vs Pro
4Paws Basic
Basic is the lightweight version.
It includes:
- Always-on 4Paws locomotion
- Four-legged movement animations
- Sit / AFK support
- Installer-based setup
- Support for avatars with existing locomotion controllers
- No camera
- No 4Paws on/off toggle
- No Tail Chasing
4Paws Pro
Pro is the full version.
It includes:
- 4Paws mode on/off toggle
- Switch between normal locomotion and four-legged locomotion
- Custom 4Paws locomotion animations
- Sit toggle
- Tail Chasing toggle
- Optional AFK layer
- Choice of Sit or Tail Chasing AFK
- Desktop experimental camera options
- Quest/Android setup without camera
- Installer support for custom locomotion setups
- GoGo Loco-compatible patching
- Patched avatar copy generation
Desktop and Quest
Desktop supports optional 4Paws camera modes.
Quest/Android does not support the 4Paws camera, so the Quest setup skips camera features.
For Quest users, the practical alternative is to physically lower yourself, crouch, or sit closer to the floor while using 4Paws mode. Your VR viewpoint will naturally lower that way.
Important Notes
This is a complex locomotion system adapted for simple installation. We made the setup as easy as possible, but VRChat avatars are not standardized. We cannot guarantee one-click installation for every avatar.
Best results are expected on humanoid avatars with reasonably standard bone structure.
Installation
4Paws now uses installer-based setup.
Basic Installation
Use:
Tools > 4Paws Basic Installer
Basic creates a patched copy of your avatar with always-on 4Paws locomotion.
Pro Installation
Use:
Tools > 4Paws Pro Installer
Pro creates a patched copy of your avatar with 4Paws toggle support and optional features.
The installer creates:
- a patched avatar prefab;
- patched controller copies;
- required VRCFury setup.
Your original avatar and original controllers are not modified.
The patched avatar is created in:
Assets/4Paws/Your Avatar Patched
Do not install 4Paws twice on an already patched avatar.
If you need to update or reinstall, go back to the original avatar and run the installer again.

Requirements
- Unity version compatible with your VRChat SDK project.
- VRChat SDK Avatars.
- VRCFury.
- Humanoid avatar.
Recommended Unity version for current VRChat projects: Unity 2022.3.22f1, unless VRChat changes the official recommended version.
